Agent questions

Can you change your eXp sponsor after you join?

No. Once your license is active at eXp Realty, the primary sponsor named on your application is locked and cannot be changed while you remain with the brokerage, regardless of your production, your tenure, or whether that sponsor ever contacts you again.

The only reset is leaving eXp for the required period and rejoining as a new agent, which costs more than the sponsor relationship is usually worth. That is why the sponsor line deserves an afternoon of attention before you submit the application, not after.

What the sponsor line actually locks

The primary sponsor on your application sets your position in eXp's revenue share structure. Other agents' long-term income depends on that placement, so eXp treats it as permanent rather than as a preference you can revise. The rule applies the same way to a brand new licensee and to a thirty-year veteran moving a book of business.

Nothing about your brokerage service depends on it. Your broker is eXp, your compliance and transaction support are eXp's, and none of that changes based on who is in the sponsor field. What is locked is the organization whose systems, training and people surround the rest of your time at the company.

Before activation, there is a window

If a name was entered in error and your license has not yet transferred, eXp may correct the record. This is the only realistic correction path and it closes the moment your account activates. If you are mid-application and having second thoughts, that is the moment to raise it, not the week after.

What leaving and rejoining actually costs

Leaving eXp dissolves the sponsor relationship. An agent who leaves and later returns rejoins as a new entrant and may name a new sponsor, after an inactive period that eXp currently states as twelve months. What does not come back:

  • Unvested stock awards are forfeited.
  • Revenue share tiers reset, and the organization built underneath you does not transfer back.
  • Time in the plan does not carry forward, however many years it was.

For almost every agent that arithmetic settles it: the cost of resetting sponsorship is larger than the value of the change. Confirm the current inactive period with eXp before acting on anything here, because company policy is eXp's to set and to revise.A longer walk through the leave-and-rejoin case is here.

The co-sponsor question

Co-sponsorship is where most of the confusion sits, because it works differently from the primary sponsor in three ways at once:

  • It is not on the application. A co-sponsor cannot be entered when you apply.
  • It is added after activation, inside a five-day window. Once your license has transferred and your eXp account is live, eXp allows five days to name a co-sponsor. After the window closes, one cannot be added.
  • There is only one, and it is also permanent. A couple or a pair of local mentors have to pick a single person.

If you intend to use a co-sponsor, set a calendar reminder for activation day. The window is short and it is the most common thing agents miss.

What to do with this before you apply

Treat the sponsor field as the one irreversible decision in an otherwise reversible process. You can change your mind about a CRM, a farm area, a niche or a team. You cannot change your mind about this. Get each candidate organization to tell you in writing what they provide, what it costs and what is expected of you, and compare the answers side by side. The seven questions worth asking are here.

Naming Smart Agent Alliance

Because the decision is permanent, we would rather you read what we actually provide before you name anyone than take a promise on a call. Smart Agent Alliance is a team inside eXp Realty. We add lead systems, training, support and a portal on top of what eXp already gives you, we charge no fee, and we take no cut of your commission. Naming an SAA sponsor also places you inside Mike Sherrard's Wolf Pack, the wider organization we are part of.

We are small, the platform is built and maintained by one person, and the agent results shown elsewhere on this site are reported by agents across that wider organization rather than by agents SAA personally sponsored. Those are the things a permanent decision deserves to be told up front.

Also asked

Can you change your sponsor at eXp Realty after joining?
No. Once your license is active at eXp, the primary sponsor named on your application is locked for as long as you remain with the brokerage.
Can a sponsor entered by mistake be corrected?
Sometimes, but only before activation. If the wrong name was entered and the license has not yet transferred, eXp may correct the record. After activation that option is gone.
Is a co-sponsor named on the eXp application?
No. A co-sponsor is added after the license has transferred and the eXp account is live, and eXp allows five days from that point to name one. Only one co-sponsor is permitted, and it is permanent once recorded.
